One of tools that got me launched into the world of traditional hand tools was the classic old auger bit. I had been trying to drill nice clean splinter free holes is soft woods and both twist bits and brad bits did not do a clean job even though the bits were new. My last option was to try to use an old hand brace drill and auger bit (brace and bit) at which I hesitated. It was hard to imagine this old thing could out perform my new fancy modern stuff.
Not only did it out perform the modern tools, the brace and bit did so quietly, with ease, and little or no dust!
Now the brace and bit or egg beater drills are my first choice not last. I am slowly trying to collect a few different sizes of braces and a nice a collection of bits. I have tried both the old Irwin bits and the Russel Jennings. So far, I think the Irwins are easier to maintain in a nice condition. I also love that yo can sharpen auger bits yourself with a simple auger bit file. If you are just starting out try both styles, the Irwin and Russel Jennings and even an expandable auger bit and see what you like best. If you have and comments or favorites, do tell…
